FIRST SEPARATION

The first separation from parents can be upsetting for both child and parent. We want to assure you that this passes quickly. We do not have a set policy on the amount of time that we allow for a child to make the adjustment to school. Each child is different and moves at his/her own pace.

On the first day of school, be sure to arrive in plenty of time. We have found that the adjustment can be quicker and faster if the caregiver does not linger, but says goodbye quickly (with a kiss and reassuring hug) and leaves the classroom. Children need to know when you are going and be able to say goodbye. It is a good idea to give a point of reference for when you will return. A comment such as “I’ll be back after music” is very helpful.

Before school begins, read a few books together with a starting school theme. Such stories can help your child get in touch with his/her feelings about going to a new place, making new friends, and separating from you. Reading together also gives your child an opportunity to talk about feelings or to ask questions about what to expect.
